Breaking Myths About Google And Your Rankings – Part 2

Myth : Google Uses Meta Tags To Rank Your Site

If you too think or believe so, you’re so 1990’s types. The myth is in fact, a radical belief that can be said to be flowing from our fore-fathers (please don’t go before renaissance, we didn’t mean that :P ). But really, at the time when search really went to define the internet, meta tags were used by most of the search engines as a mean to rank web pages. However, Google has never used them. Not even in the stone age. Don’t believe us? Sigh!

Many blogger use zillions of SEO plugins, hoping that they would help their blog, earn respect in the eyes of big daddy (read, Google). And the thing that makes them half-insomniac is, the meta-tag description. Some of the most popular SEO plugins have a very huge part dedicated to custom meta-tags. However, these are of no use as far as Google is concerned. And here’s the proof.

To get a feel, that Google don’t even look at your Meta Tags, do an experiment. Write a test article and then fill the entire Meta-Tags with words which do not appear anywhere in your article. For example, if your article is about blogging, fill your meta-tags with page 3 gossips. In theory, if Google uses meta-tags as an important factor in ranking websites, your web page should rank somewhere for the irrelevant meta tags you provided. Right?

Wrong. Go to Google’s advanced search and search only your domain about the tags. And you’ll get the idea, what we’re talking about. Well, this was about Google. This trick can also be handy if you want to test if any particular search engine uses meta-tags or not. Google however, can use meta-tags as an important factor for pages, primarily composed of graphics (like, flash) etc.

Conclusion

Meta-Tags do not define your destiny. It’s your content. So, do not expect filling your page with irrelevant meta-tags and get in the results queue. Google loves relevancy and don’t give a damn about your meta content.
